Decorative Honour Boards in Beech
Beech is just about the lightest coloured wood available with a subtle and attractive grain pattern.
The pale colour lends itself to darker coloured lettering rather than the gold colour often associated with honour boards.
In the board dispalyed here we have used gold lettering in the title 'Eastbury Comprehensive School' but have given the lettering a black outline against which the gold can contrast.
These boards are quite elaborate and therefore expensive but as the school ordered a quantity ten the cost per board reduced dramatically,
by about 30%; the economy of scale as they say.
Many modern or new build schools feature beech wood furniture and doors as a result the popularity of beech honour boards has increased in recent years. The timber can be considered a little bland compared with oak or ash but as you can see from the pictures lower down the page, beech can be interesting as well as subtle.
If you are after a light coloured wood you can still consider both ash and oak. Ash is only a little darker in its natural state but has a more dynamic grain pattern. Oak is usually stained to a darker colour but again if left in its natural state it shows a pale honey colour when varnished.
